This belt is a fine example of a soldier modified Model 1851 Mounted Service belt worn by Federal enlisted cavalrymen and mounted artilleryman prior to and during the Civil War. At some point, the soldier whom this belt was issued removed the saber hanging loops and straps, along with the shoulder belt.
